Washington, Feb 2, 2005 -

Tonight U.S. Representative John R. Carter (TX-31) attended President George W. Bush’s State of the Union address, for the third time. After the address Carter made the following comments:

"The President showed the nation and the world tonight that his purpose of bettering this nation has not wavered, and his foresight and commitment have only been strengthened.

"Under the President’s leadership this nation has overcome the obstacle of a weak economy by putting tax money back in the hands of taxpayers. The American people need to know that we plan on cutting spending, sending a refund check home and creating jobs.

"Our nation and the world are safer today.  In just the past year, Afghanis, Iraqis, and Palestinians have all experienced defining moments of democracy by voting freely. Now, these nations are embracing and building upon their new found freedom and democracy.

"Tonight President Bush acknowledged the generational challenge before us and offered a solution for Social Security. Those who are 55 and older are not at risk and their benefits will not change, but Social Security needs to be strengthened for those who are younger.

"The President has a vision for this nation and it is not one of complacency but one that moves this nation forward. That’s why I stand beside him, because the President is a true leader – one that can recognize a problem and provide a solution."
