Congressman John Carter (TX-31) today announced the appointment of Elizabeth Anne Birkman, 17, of Round Rock to the U.S. House of Representatives Page Program. Carter nominated Birkman to the highly-competitive program, where she won approval through a bipartisan leadership selection process.
“I was honored to sponsor Ms. Birkman, and delighted that she won this appointment to serve the U.S. House through the Page Program,” says Carter. “Based on her accomplishments and character, I know she will do an outstanding job in helping the House do its duty, and will be a credit to our district in the Nation’s Capitol.”
Birkman is a rising senior year at Round Rock Christian Academy, where she is a member of the Varsity Cheer Squad, Speech and Debate team, Spanish Club, and Choir. She is also active in St. Phillips United Methodist Church, where she is a member of the Youth Group and has participated in multiple mission trips. She has been recognized as a State Qualifier in Speech and Debate for three years, a National Qualifier to the National Forensic League Tournament in 2011 in Original Oratory, and achieved the highest academic average in Speech and English for 2010-2011. She is the daughter of Rick and Lisa Birkman of Round Rock, where Mr. Birkman is the owner of a roofing contracting firm and Mrs. Birkman serves as a Williamson County Commissioner.
Pages have been serving the House of Representatives since 1827. Working as a team, Pages assist Members with their legislative duties, deliver correspondence and small packages within the congressional complex, answer phones in the Member cloakrooms, and prepare the House Floor for sessions. The program is open to high school juniors with a GPA of 3.0 or higher in core academic subjects and in good academic and disciplinary standing. Applicants must initially apply with their U.S. House or Senate Member.
