Congressman Carter declares Nov. 19 "Survivors Victory Day" in honor of local teen

Congressman John Carter officially declared November 19 as Survivors Victory Day in District 31. He is also working to make the day a national day of remembrance. Congressman Carter is doing so on behalf of 13-year old Jessica Huber from Leander, Texas.

(ROUND ROCK, T.X.-) Congressman John Carter (R-TX31) today officially declared November 19 as Survivors Victory Day in District 31. He is also working to make the day a national day of remembrance. Congressman Carter is doing so on behalf of 13-year old Jessica Huber from Leander, Texas.

On Nov. 19, 2002 Jessica Huber was nearly killed after her mother ran a red light near Manor and crashed into a truck going 70 miles per hour. Jessica was not strapped into her car seat at the time. Her mother was also high on narcotics at the time. Jessica’s father, Mark Huber, recalled that horrific day saying when he arrived at the hospital doctors had given up hope that Jessica would survive. She had 30 blood transfusions, multiple facial surgeries and brain surgeries. Despite all of the odds against her, today Jessica is a happy 13-year old.

Mark has been Jessica’s rock and says he would like to help others in similar situations. He is working to start a non-profit that would provide access to resources for victims of crimes. Huber says it’s important to remember victims of crimes through Survivors Victory Day because often they run out of help and hope.

“I have a miracle. Jessica is a miracle and I want others to know they don’t have to give up hope. I have had my struggles since her accident. I ran out of assistance. I lost my job. But I never gave up and I want to find a way to help people succeed.” said Mark Huber, Jessica’s father. “One minute of silence a year would remind people that there are victims out there who still need our help and support.”

Congressman Carter officially declared Nov. 19 as Survivors Victory Day in District 31 but is working to introduce a bill that would make it a national day of remembrance.

“Jessica is truly an inspiration and a light to those she meets. She gives hope to others who have been affected by horrible crimes and has given me inspiration to share her light nationally,” said Congressman Carter. “She is truly a miracle.”
