Today Representative John Carter (TX-31) joined 199 of his colleagues in sending a letter to House and Senate leadership expressing his opposition to congressional Democrats’ efforts to repeal the Hyde Amendment. The Hyde Amendment prohibits tax dollars from being used for abortion services. “The Hyde Amendment has a decades long history of being bipartisan. In fact, every Democrat president since Jimmy Carter has continued the Hyde Amendment, but now with Democrats in control, this commonsense provision is already a target. The Hyde Amendment not only works to protect the inalienable right to life, it also protects Americans’ hard-earned dollars from being used to fund abortions. Taxpayers paid about $55 million for abortion services per year between the Roe v. Wade decision and the implementation of the Hyde Amendment. “I cannot stand by while members of the other side of the aisle attempt to force hard-working citizens to pay to end human life. I fight for the Hyde Amendment on behalf of every person who does not want to see their tax dollars used to fund something that is the exact opposite of the American values I swore to uphold. I demand leadership maintain the Hyde Amendment to protect taxpayer dollars and the lives of so many children.” Read the final letter here. # # # |
