Killeen and Copperas Cove to get new VA clinics

The Department of Veterans Affairs will soon open clinics in Killeen and Copperas Cove. The "contract" clinics will not be staffed by VA workers, but rather a clinic contracted to work for the VA. The clinics will have access to VA medical records and work closely with VA facilities, according to the VA. Click here to read more.

Carter Leads Bipartisan Coalition in Passage of Recycling Amendments

Representative John Carter (TX-31) passed an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act to give military recycling centers the authority to accept quality recyclable goods from local communities and allow the profits from the sale of these materials to go to the Soldier Morale, Welfare & Recreation account. Rep. Carter offered the amendment with Representatives Sanford Bishop (D-GA), Henry Cuellar (D-TX), Richard Hudson (D-NC), Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD), and Steve Womack (R-AK).

The deadline to nominate a veteran for the 2019 Congressional Veteran Commendation (CVC) is July 19. The Congressional Veteran Commendation is a nominations-based program designed to recognize Texas' 31st Congressional District veterans for their wartime sacrifices and peacetime community involvement.

Carter, Larsen Bill to Protect Gold Star Families Passes House

Today, the House of Representatives passed Representative John Carter (TX-31) and Representative Rick Larsen's (WA-02) legislation to change the tax law for Gold Star families receiving survivor benefits. The Children of Fallen Servicemembers AMT Relief Act updates the federal tax law to count Survivor Benefit Plan annuities paid to a minor beneficiary as earned income, so the payment would not fall under the Alternative Minimum Tax. The legislation was included within a larger package, H.R. 1994 the SECURE Act.

Representative John Carter (TX-31) joined Representatives Jimmy Panetta (D-CA), Richard Hudson (R-NC), Anthony Brown (D-MD), Sanford Bishop (D-GA), Denny Heck (D-WA), Anna G. Eshoo (D-CA), Vicky Hartzler (R-MO), Van Taylor (R-TX), Michael Waltz (R-FL) and Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) in introducing the Better Military Housing Act last Friday. H.R. 2811 requires the Secretary of Defense to develop a plan to address safety and quality issues in private military housing.
