Representative John Carter (TX-31) released the following statement after he voted against H.R. 1319, the American Rescue Plan. “The most important job I have is to take care of my constituents. It is no question that COVID-19 has left countless Americans devastated and in need. Many have experienced unimaginable loss and are looking for answers and a path forward. The American Rescue Plan takes advantage of the American people’s desire to move forward, and instead of investing to improve lives, business, and the economy, it puts the needs of the Democrat leadership over the needs of my constituents. “Currently, there is $1 trillion of COVID relief money that remains unspent, so I find it hard to support another $1.9 trillion, especially since most of this bill has nothing to do with COVID relief. When only 1% of funding is allocated towards vaccine distribution and only 5% towards public health, that leaves the majority of spending for non-COVID related items. While I wanted to see legislation that would increase vaccine distribution, support small businesses, and get students back in the classroom safely, this bill focuses on Democrat pet projects like $112 million for underground rail and a bridge to Canada. This legislation does nothing but waste Americans’ hard-earned tax dollars and put the wants of Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer over the needs of the American people.” ### |
