Congressman John Carter (R-TX31), Chairman of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, is releasing the following statement regarding the D.C. Navy Yard shooting that took place on Monday, September 16.

“To those affected by the DC Navy Yard shooting this morning, my thoughts, prayers, and greatest sympathies are with you. I am continuing to monitor this situation and praying for everyone’s safety. As the Representative of Fort Hood, this type of senseless attack strikes an incredibly deep and personal cord with me, and is a reminder of the need for increased vigilance in a post-9/11 world.

I understand that our first responders are often the first line of defense, and have introduced and passed many bills that have helped increase their training. I hope that we can continue to grow programs like the Texas State University’s ALERRT program, which has used its funding to develop and deliver courses across the nation, providing our first responders training that goes above and beyond. As the Chairman of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, it is among my highest priorities to ensure that these acts of violence are prevented in the future and that our nation and our citizens are protected.”
