(ROUND ROCK, TX) – A small group of MoveOn.org members answered President’s Obama’s call to visit congressional offices over the debt ceiling debate, but so did a very large number of Tea Party conservatives, as Congressman John Carter’s Round Rock office served as an informal political forum this week, with donuts, coffee and budget debate enjoyed by all.
Around 60 conservatives from the Central Texas 9-12 Group and Williamson County Tea Party and about a half-dozen supporters of the President’s call turned out simultaneously in Carter’s office, which welcomed all with Round Rock Doughnuts. The groups exchanged views in good humor, ranging from leaving the debt ceiling unchanged regardless of economic consequences, to raising the ceiling to accommodate all of the President’s massive new deficit spending proposals.
“This impromptu meeting demonstrates why Texas is such an exceptional place,” says Carter. “We have folks with widely different opinions show up together, freely voice those opinions in a friendly fashion, and enjoy the whole event in a spirit of good humor and political tolerance. If we could export a little more of that to Washington we could get our national debt problems solved a lot easier. I thank everyone who turned out for taking their time to provide this very valuable feedback on public opinion in our district.”
Local print and television news showed up to cover the protest, but did not report on the event after conservative supporters outnumbered protestors.
