Carter, Bipartisan Colleagues Demand SBA Fixes Shuttered Venue Operators Grants Program

Representative Carter (TX-31), along with U.S. Representatives Angie Craig (D-MN), Roger Williams (R-TX), Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA), Dean Phillips (D-MN) and over 200 bipartisan colleagues, sent a letter calling on the Small Business Administration (SBA) to stabilize the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant (SVOG) program. The SVOG program provides emergency assistance grants to venues that were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Representative Carter (TX-31), along with U.S. Representatives Angie Craig (D-MN), Roger Williams (R-TX), Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA), Dean Phillips (D-MN) and over 200 bipartisan colleagues, sent a letter calling on the Small Business Administration (SBA) to stabilize the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant (SVOG) program. The SVOG program provides emergency assistance grants to venues that were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The SVOG program has consistently experienced challenges that have led to significant delays in releasing funds. As of June 14, only 400 grants have been approved out of the 14,000 applications. In the letter, Representative Carter and his colleagues demand SBA expedite the release of funding to struggling venues across the country and explain the issues that have caused these delays.
“It is no question that small businesses were deeply impacted by COVID-19, and venues that rely on large gatherings were one of the hardest hit sectors. Venues from across Texas’ 31st district are desperate for these SVOG funds and the ineptness of the SBA’s rollout is causing livelihoods to be destroyed. If the Small Business Administration doesn’t act quickly, many venues will have to shut their doors for good. SBA Administrator Isabel Guzman needs to act now.”
