Washington, Jan 26, 2004 -

Today U.S. Representative John Carter (TX-31) joined Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison and Rep. Kevin Brady as they announced the introduction of the Sales Tax Deduction Permanency bill.

Carter said, "Texas’ no income tax policy is about as sacred as the Alamo. Texans deserve fair treatment and should be allowed to permanently deduct their sales tax."

Last year language that allowed taxpayers in all states to deduct the higher of either their state income tax or annual sales tax, a deduction that was eliminated by Congress in 1986, was included in the American Jobs Creation Act.

"A tax cut puts money back in the hands of Texans and fuels job growth. That is why my colleagues and I are urging this tax cut to become permanent – we want plenty of jobs for Texans and more cash in their wallet."
