Congressman John Carter (TX-31) released the following statement after he supported, H.R. 1, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which passed the House today. “Today is a historic step forward for a group of Americans who have long been forgotten under the current tax code: our hardworking middle-class. For decades, middle-income families have been bearing the heavy burden of high taxes - but today, we are working to change that. By passing the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, we are fulfilling our promise to deliver tax relief to those who need it most. “For Texans, this legislation means more jobs and more money in your pockets. Texas middle-class families could see an additional $2,558 in after-tax income in their wallets. This extra money could mean the difference between sending a child to college, going on a family vacation, or just making ends meet. Tax Reform is bringing real relief to real families, in Texas and across the nation. “It has been 31 years since our last tax overhaul, and in that time the tax code has been bloated with special interest loopholes and confusing regulations. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act isn’t for big corporations or special interest groups - it’s for the American people. This legislation is for the hardworking families that make our country great, and I’m proud to support this legislation.” Rep. Carter represents Texas District 31, which includes Fort Hood, the largest active duty armored military installation in the free world. He serves as Chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Appropriations, co-chairman of the Congressional Army Caucus, is on the Subcommittee for Commerce, Justice and Science and the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee. |
