Carter calls on President to work with Congress to legally amend Obamacare

The American people deserve to keep their health care. This is why Congressman John Carter is a cosponsor of the Keep Your Health Plan Act (H.R. 3350). Rep. Carter voted Friday in favor of the legislation that would allow health plans currently available on the individual market to continue next year. The House passed H.R. 3350 by a vote of 261-157 with 39 Democrats voting in favor of the measure.

On November 14, President Obama made the unilateral decision that he would allow a one-year delay on plans, without the needed Congressional approval. Rep. Carter, Chairman of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee says the fix is temporary and that Americans deserve a permanent solution that ensures they will be able to keep their plans, their coverage and their doctors.

“President Obama cannot simply wave his magic wand, tell insurance companies to reinstitute cancelled plans, all while bypassing Congress, which he does far too often. I am happy he has admitted Obamacare’s failure and is working to help the American people affected by cancelled plans, but he needs to do so by changing the law through Congress,” said Chairman Carter. 

Throughout the rollout of Obamacare, the President repeatedly promised Americans that ‘if you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan, period.’ This is a broken promise. Many of Americans feel lied to, including those in my district, like Elizabeth Hoffman from Hutto, Texas. Elizabeth, a single mom with a young son, cannot afford to lose the plan she has now and pay double for a new plan with fewer benefits.”

Kelly Masters, a small business owner from Cedar Park, Texas, wrote Chairman Carter explaining her Blue Cross/Blue Shield plan is increasing from $950 per month to $1,125 per month and that she will have to pay an extra $500 a year in Obamacare fees.

“I am appalled that our family and small business just got socked with a $500 tax bill from the Federal Government in exchange for nothing. Don't we pay enough in taxes?” said Masters. “Between our medical insurance, Federal withholding, our Social Security and Medicare, we already effectively see only 60% our paychecks hit our bank account. We are good people. We started a business, and we pay more than our fair share. Why a new $500 tax on our existing health care?”

Chairman Carter is pushing for a permanent fix. “We need to stop extending deadlines, temporarily fixing problems and dismantle this law so that government gets out of the way of American’s health care.”
