Carter Reaffirms Support for Israel

Congressman John Carter (R-TX31) helped reaffirm congressional support for Israel with multiple efforts this week, in response to Palestinian attempts to undermine the Oslo agreements for a two-state solution for peace between the Palestinians and Israel.

“The framework for long-term peace is already in place with the Oslo Peace Accords, if both parties will abide by those agreements,” says Carter.  “When one side breaches the accord, the world must speak out and take action to insure that this best chance for peace is not lost.  Israel has stayed on the path, while Palestinian leadership and Hizballah are in blatant violation.  That cannot be tolerated.”

Carter cosponsored House Resolution 834, urging the European Union to designate Hizballah a terrorist organization subject to sanctions.  The group is implicated in decades of terrorist attacks including the 1983 bombings of the U.S. Embassy and Marine Barracks in Lebanon and this year’s attack against Israeli tourists in Bulgaria.

Carter joined other lawmakers in calling for the President to take action against the Palestinian leadership for violating the Oslo Peace Accords by seeking unilateral United Nations state observer status.   Members specifically asked the President to close the PLO office in Washington, D.C., and recall the U.S.  Consul-General in Jerusalem.

The former Texas Judge also co-signed congressional appreciation to the governments of Canada, Czech Republic, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, and Panama for joining the United States in voting against observer status for Palestine in the U.N. General Assembly.
