Carter Secures $11 Million for Community Oriented Policing

Representative John Carter (TX-31) secured $11 million for Community Oriented Policing grants in the FY21 Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations bill that will be voted on tomorrow.

Representative John Carter (TX-31) secured $11 million for Community Oriented Policing grants in the FY21 Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations bill that will be voted on tomorrow.

“Police officers have a tough job, and they must have the resources they need to keep our communities safe and keep themselves safe.” Representative Carter said. “This $11 million that funds my earlier legislation, the POLICE Act, provides grants for local law enforcement agencies to complete scenario-based training. It has been proven that scenario-based training for law enforcement officers greatly improves their ability to make split-second decisions. When faced with fast moving, dangerous situations, officers with scenario-based training have the tools necessary to save lives.”

Background: In 2016, Representative Carter’s bill, the POLICE Act, was signed into law by President Barack Obama. This legislation revised the rules of the Office of Community Oriented Policing Service (COPS) to allow law enforcement and medical personnel across the country to use federal grants to train and better prepare for dangerous situations, like active shooter events.
