Representative John Carter (TX-31) introduced the Recruit and Retain Act to help local law enforcement recruit and retain police officers. The legislation will allow COPS grantees to use funding for recruiting new law enforcement officers and retaining current police.

“Washington Democrats disparaging remarks against law enforcement and the defund the police movement made recruiting and retaining police officers almost impossible,” said Representative Carter. “As a result, overtime costs are higher, there are less police on our streets, and police officers are stretched thin. Whether it’s a small town or big city, departments are struggling to recruit and keep officers. My bill will allow COPS grants to be used to recruit new officers and keep existing police. We’ve seen what the defund movement has done to our nation’s police officers, it's time to give them the support they need to keep our communities safe.”
