Budget deal reduces effects of President’s sequester cuts

FORT HOOD, TX- Congressman John Carter (R-TX31) voted for H.J. Res. 59, the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2013.  This budget agreement will reduce the reckless cuts from the President’s sequester by more than $60 billion while protecting investment in our national defense and lowering our long-term deficit.

“We must replace the President’s sequester with a responsible budget that preserves our national defense and gets our fiscal house in order. While this compromise is far from perfect, this week’s budget deal shows that Congress is returning to its constitutional authority to direct spending,” said Rep. Carter, Chairman of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee.

The budget deal will bring more than $30 billion back to the Department of Defense, and prevent future cuts that would be devastating to Fort Hood and the Department of Defense. Those increases are fully offset through targeted cuts elsewhere in the budget and the compromise ultimately lowers deficits without raising taxes, while restoring vital funding to our national defense.

“Texas District 31 has the pride of the largest military installation post in the free world, Fort Hood, I will continue to fight to ensure the men and women in uniform have the resources they need to be as safe and effective as possible when we ask them to go into harm’s way in defense of our nation. I will also work to replace sequester and allow Congress to make the intelligent cuts in our bloated government while keeping jobs and bringing funding back to Fort Hood and the DoD as a whole.”

“This budget provides a level of certainty for the next two years and will help prevent another duel and unnecessary government shutdown, provides relief to the DOD and allows Congress to use its constitutional authority to direct spending. I will continue my fight to makes necessary and meaningful cuts, instead of handcuffing the Army and the American public to across the board cuts due to the President’s sequester.”
