Congressman John Carter (R-TX31) is pushing the United States Army for answers after recent media reports suggest the Army warned soldiers who support certain Tea Party and Christian organizations, citing their ideology and beliefs are counterproductive to the country’s security. Rep. Carter, along with Rep. Roger Williams and Rep. Bill Flores sent a letter to Major General Anthony Ierardi, 1st Cavalry Division Commander and acting Fort Hood Commander, requesting more information and clarification on the disturbing reports. The media reports say the Oct. 17 pre-deployment briefing included warnings for soldiers against supporting certain political and Christian organizations. The letter sent to Major General Ierardi Friday requested confirmation on the validity of these reports, explanation of current Fort Hood policies in this area as well as any available information on the Army’s inquiry into the matter. “These reports are very upsetting and it is my sincere hope that they prove entirely unfounded,” said Congressman Carter, Co-Chairman of the House Army Caucus. “The freedom to support the religious and political organizations of our choosing is the right of every American, including our men and women in uniform. I look forward to a full investigation into these reports and will help in any way possible to ensure our soldiers’ rights are protected.” |
