2012 Congressional Art Competition Winners Recognized
U.S. Rep. John Carter congratulates Best in Show winner Lamberto Elizondo from Killeen, for his drawing “Mexico’s History”.

(ROUND ROCK, TX) – Congressman John Carter has announced the winners from the 31st District of Texas of the 2012 Congressional Art Competition, “An Artistic Discovery”, at a ceremony in Round Rock.

This year’s Best in Show award was presented to Lamberto Elizondo from Killeen High School for his drawing “Mexico’s History”.  The work also won 1st in drawings.  Elizondo’s art teacher is Joshua Bezdek. 

Other winners and works are:

  • Brooke Baker, Killeen High School, Teacher – Joshua Bezdek. “Locket of Love” – 2nd in Drawings
  • Sofia Restrepo, Georgetown High School, Teacher – Rachel Rollins.  “Light Play” – 3rd in Drawings
  • Rainey Miller, McNeil High School, Teacher – Diane Ebert.  “Empathy” – 1st in Paintings
  • Simone Tay, Georgetown High School, Teacher Kiley Nickels.  “Freedom is Not for the Timid” – 2nd in Paintings
  • Julia McIntosh, McNeil High School, Teacher Diane Ebert. “Reflections or Imperfections” – 3rd in Paintings

  • Erin McDaniel, McNeil High School, Teacher Diane Ebert.  “Story of My Life” – 2nd in Mixed
  • Jessica Doss, Eastview High School, Teacher Carol Watson. “A Cup of Tea” – 3rd in Mixed  

“Hosting this event is one of the great honors of serving this district,” says Carter.  “It is a real pleasure every year to see the art work produced by our young people, and to meet and talk with these young artists and their high school art teachers who do so much to encourage these talents.  I congratulate each of our winners, and I look forward to soon welcoming Mr. Elizondo and his art work to Washington.”  

The U.S. House of Representatives hosts the nationwide competition annually to showcase the works of high school artists from all 435 Congressional Districts.  Entries are judged by a panel of distinguished artists at the local level. The Best in Show winning artwork from each district is displayed for one year tunnel between the Cannon House Office Building and the U.S. Capitol. In addition, the winner from Texas District 31 is awarded two roundtrip airline tickets and accommodations for two nights in Washington.
