U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), U.S. Representative John Carter (R-TX31), and U.S. Representative Roger Williams (R-TX25) issued the following statements after the Secretary of the Army, John McHugh, ordered financial benefits must coincide with the Purple Heart medals for the victims of the 2009 Fort Hood terrorist attack. On Tuesday, the Fort Hood Delegation sent a letter to the Secretary McHugh urging him to follow through with the intent of the Congress that all of the Purple Heart recipients would be granted the corresponding benefits. Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz, Rep. Carter and Rep. Williams worked together in ensuring that the victims of the Ft. Hood attack inspired by terrorism were able to receive the Purple Heart and Defense of Freedom Medals through the FY15 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Through enacting this legislation, it was Congress’ intent to ensure the Purple Heart be awarded to our heroes and just as importantly, the benefits that come with this recognition. “Last week’s ceremony was an important step toward honoring the heroes of that day, and I am pleased the Army has moved swiftly to ensure the Fort Hood Purple Heart recipients will receive all the benefits for which they are eligible” said Sen. Cornyn. “I am pleased to learn Sec. McHugh has directed that all appropriate benefits be provided to those who received the Purple Heart at last Friday’s Fort Hood ceremony, as Congress intended. The Secretary’s decision to provide hostile fire pay and combat-related special compensation finally provides appropriate recognition for those who were killed and injured during this heinous terrorist attack against our nation. I thank Sec. McHugh for providing a definitive response and clear guidance to ensure this matter is resolved as quickly as possible,” said Sen. Cruz. “As the representative for the ‘Great Place,’ my fight has always been for the soldiers and their families. This five-year long battle has been about securing both benefits and Purple Hearts for the victims of this horrific terrorist attack. I am pleased that the Secretary of the Army is with me in this fight and has made it clear that the victims will receive their due benefits,” said Rep. Carter. "Last week we were solemnly reminded of the sacrifices our soldiers make, and today we are thankful that their service has officially been recognized,” said Rep. Williams. “Just when we thought we had crossed the finish line we learned the race wasn’t over. Today I am happy to announce that after more than five years of work these brave men and women and their families will finally receive the support that they so rightfully deserve.” #### |
