The Congressional Award was established in 1979 as a way to recognize the service and achievement of young people. In order to receive the Congressional Silver Medal, Purser taught younger scouts, planned activities like mountain biking, kayaking and community service. He also decreased his three-mile distance running time by 10 minutes, traveled on a 10-night backpacking trip and became certified in Wilderness and Remote First Aid. Participants must set goals in four areas: Travis stated in his record book, “This award has given me the opportunity to push myself, set goals and achieve those goals.” Congressman Carter congratulates Purser on his commitment. “Travis has already received the Bronze Congressional Award, demonstrating his commitment to making his community, himself and the life of those around him better. I am proud that he has continued that selfless commitment to receive the Silver Congressional Award.”
