FORT HOOD, TX- Congressman John Carter (R-TX31) presented the Purple Heart Medal to Staff Sergeant Christopher Michael Barfield of Georgetown, Texas this afternoon during a ceremony at the Fort Hood III Corps Headquarters Building. SSG Barfield accepted the medal in front of family and friends.
SSG Barfield is an Army veteran, serving from 1994 until June 2011. Barfield sustained injuries while serving with the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment in Baghdad, Iraq in 2007. Barfield’s truck was struck by an IED leaving him with multiple injuries and a back contusion.
“It is an honor to present such a well deserved award to Staff Sergeant Barfield. His courage and sacrifice helped to continue the security and freedom of our great nation,” said Congressman John Carter, Vice Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs. “As the Representative of Fort Hood, I have the privilege of representing many of our war heroes and am reminded daily of the sacrifices they make. It is the greatest privilege to be able to personally bestow this medal to him and extend my thanks to him and his family.”
Christopher Michael Barfield of Georgetown, TX, served as an Armor Crewman for eight years and then served nine years as a Cavalry Scout. He original enlisted in the Army in 1994 and served until June 2011. Barfield’s awards include the Purple Heart Medal, Army Commendation Medal (4th Award), Army Achievement Medal (3rd Award), Army Good Conduct Medal (4th Award), National Defense Service Medal (2nd Award), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal W/ Campaign Star, Army Lapel Button, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (2nd Award), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (2nd Award) and the Army’s Combat Action Badge.
