Carter outraged as Democratic leadership illegally maneuvers to reverse final vote

Washington, D.C., Aug 3, 2007 -  

In an unprecedented move last night on the House floor, Democrats illegally maneuvered to reverse the outcome of a vote that would have blocked Democrats from granting taxpayer-funded benefits, including housing benefits, to illegal immigrants.

“These are the kinds of corrupt political tactics that people back home are sick of seeing in Washington,” Congressman Carter said. “I am here to fight for my constituents and prevent their hard-earned tax dollars from being spent on housing benefits for illegal aliens. We won this fight last night, Democrats voted with Republicans, but the Democratic leadership maneuvered illegally to grant benefits to illegal aliens.”

The vote, which occurred late last night, passed 215-213 in favor of the Republican motion to bar undocumented immigrants from receiving federal funds appropriated in the agricultural spending bill. However, Rep. Michael McNulty (D-NY), who was presiding, did not read the official vote tally but upon a signal from his leaders announced the motion failed. In the chaos that followed, three Democrats were forced to switch their vote so the official tally became 212-216.”

Republicans and Democrat leaders are currently in negotiations about how to resolve the situation.
