Washington, D.C., Jul 25, 2007 -

U.S. Congressman John R. Carter (TX-31), a member of the House Appropriations Committee, secured $400 thousand in the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) Appropriations bill for a new Armed Services YMCA to be built in Harker Heights.

“I am pleased to secure these funds that will assist in building a new Armed Services YMCA in Harker Heights,” Congressman Carter said. “Not only will this project provide military and civilian families with a place to exercise, but it also provides programs to help wounded soldiers who are returning home from the war rehabilitate and adjust to their new way of life.”

The facility is scheduled to include a fitness center, gymnasium, indoor swimming pool, cardio center and a child care center.

Passage of the bill in the House of Representatives is a critical step to ensure these important funds are provided for the new facility in Harker Heights. If passed in the Senate the bill will proceed to a Conference Committee where both Houses of Congress will create a compromise bill to be presented to the President for signing.
