Washington, DC, Feb 6, 2007 - U.S. Congressman John Carter today announced that the Copperas Cove Fire Department has received a $71,955 grant for firefighting and emergency response needs. The funding was awarded through the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program.

“I am pleased that we can offer this grant to enhance the capabilities of the men and women of Copperas Cove that protect their community,” Congressman Carter said. “They risk their lives to save their neighbors every day, and their citizenry and bravery should be applauded. This grant will help ensure that our first responders have the most up-to-date equipment they need to best do their jobs.

The AFG program is a component of DHS’s effort to strengthen the nation’s level of preparedness and ability to respond to fires and fire-related hazards. This program awards grants to fire departments and emergency medical service organizations to help purchase response equipment, personal protective equipment and vehicles. Eligible organizations are selected for the grants through a competitive process overseen by fire service experts. This program has provided $2.4 billion in grants to fire departments and other first responders since 2001.
