Washington, DC, Aug 10, 2006 - U.S. Congressman John Carter (TX-31) today made the following statement in response to British authorities disrupting a major terrorist plot to detonate bombs smuggled onto multiple aircraft with flight plans from Britain to the United States.

“Today’s foiled terrorist plot serves as a shocking reminder that we must be diligent in securing our nation. As we fight for freedom and democracy in a post 9/11 world, we must remember that we are confronting an enemy that hides in the shadows and seeks to harm innocent Americans. We cannot become complacent; instead, we must maintain our resolve to protect American families and win the War on Terror.

“I applaud the British authorities for apprehending these terrorists before they were able to carry out their deadly plot. The cooperation of allies such as the United Kingdom has allowed us to successfully protect our nation, as well as countries around the globe, against terrorist plots such as this.”

Following news of the foiled terrorist plot, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security raised the threat level for commercial flights coming to the United States from Britain to red, or severe. Passengers will not be allowed to carry liquids, including beverages, on board.
