Washington, DC, Jul 28, 2006 - U.S. Congressman John Carter (TX-31) today supported House passage of a bill that will provide support for a valuable secondary and postsecondary vocational education program. The conference report on S. 250, the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act of 2005 will ensure that the Perkins program is funded through Fiscal Year 2012. “The Perkins program has helped thousands of young adults gain valuable academic and technical skills,” Congressman Carter said. “I am pleased to support a bill that will help ensure that schools continue to provide students with the skills needed to succeed in the 21st century workforce. House passage of this legislation demonstrates the need for a renewed focus on academic achievement, accountability, the effective use of federal funding, and enhanced professional development opportunities for teachers.” S. 250, the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act of 2005, provides funds to link secondary and postsecondary education and encourage dual enrollment, improves coordination between secondary and postsecondary institutions, maintains states’ and local communities’ control over the education process, provides incentives for improved school performance, and enhances teacher development programs, among other things. This bill will now be sent to the President for his signature. ###
