Congressmen  John R. Carter and C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger – Co-Chairs of the bipartisan House Army Caucus – today applauded President Joe Biden’s announcement that he intends to nominate Christine Wormuth as Secretary of the Army. If confirmed, she would be the first female to hold the position in U.S. history.

Wormuth has held numerous positions in foreign policy and national security including serving as Under Secretary of Defense Policy, which is the third most senior civilian position within the Pentagon. Her nomination, once submitted, must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate. 

“I welcome President Biden’s nomination of Christine Wormuth as Secretary of the Army,” said Representative Carter. “Her experience in national security and counter-terrorism will serve the U.S. Army and the country well. Once the Senate confirms her, I look forward to working with Ms. Wormuth to ensure that our soldiers have the resources they need to be successful on and off the battlefield.”

“As co-chair of the House Army Caucus, I welcome Christine’s nomination and I encourage my colleagues in the Senate to quickly confirm her,” Congressman Ruppersberger said. “Not only is Christine a fellow Terp, she is well-respected within the Department of Defense and knows how to navigate the Pentagon to the benefit of the Army. She is extremely well-versed in the pressing challenges that face our nation – including counter terrorism and great power competition. She will be an excellent advocate for our Soldiers, their families and our veterans.”

The House Army Caucus includes members from both parties and works to educate their fellow House Members on Army needs, and advocate for those needs in the legislative process.
