For too long, high school students across the nation have been told a technical credential is a second-rate alternative to a four-year college degree. Here in the heart of Central Texas, our district is leading the way in changing that stigma.
For too long, high school students across the nation have been told a technical credential is a second-rate alternative to a four-year college degree. Here in the heart of Central Texas, our district is leading the way in changing that stigma. By providing exciting Career and Technical Education opportunities to students ranging from culinary arts to aviation, mechanics to beauty, our school districts are empowering students to pursue their passions and placing them on a pathway to success. In Georgetown, high school students in the TangoFlight program collaborate in building fully functioning airplanes. From tightening the first screw to seeing their project take flight, students gain hands-on experience and receive dual-course credit they can apply to high-demand jobs in the aviation industry. TangoFlight’s inaugural, nationally acclaimed program took off with so much success they are already looking to expand opportunities for future students in Central Texas and across the country. Students and faculty at Killeen school district’s Career Center also display the value of Career and Technical Education. Not only do these bright students learn the technical skills necessary to succeed in fields such as automotive mechanics, health care and the beauty industry, they learn the value of smart business practices and leadership. Killeen district beauty students hone their skills and serve their community at The Salon, serving their clients with both talent and professionalism. Students can complete these programs, earn trade credentials or certificates and immediately find competitive, well-paying jobs upon graduation. No student has the same interests or strengths, and giving our students a choice for their own success is crucial. As a father of four and grandfather of six, I know every child is different. As adults, mentors, parents and educators, we must empower our kids to follow their own right path. Every individual plays an important role in the success of our community, no matter their individual passion or career path. It’s time for the country to recognize the importance of technical careers to our economy, and invest in Career and Technical Education as we have here in Central Texas. Rep.
