Carter Urges Senate to Reject SCOTUS Nominee

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Today, Rep. John R. Carter (R-TX-31) released the following statement after President Obama announced his nomination of Merrick Garland for the U.S. Supreme Court.

Today, Rep. John R. Carter (R-TX-31) released the following statement after President Obama announced his nomination of Merrick Garland for the U.S. Supreme Court.

“Upon the passing of Justice Scalia, I filed a House Resolution (H. Res. 621), urging the Senate to reject any liberal Supreme Court nominations. I fully support Leader McConnell and Chairman Grassley’s decision to not move forward with the confirmation process and I strongly urge members of the Senate to follow suit,” said Rep. Carter.

“While the President has the right to nominate a candidate for the Supreme Court, the Senate has an equally important right to not confirm the nominee. With the most liberal Court since 1937, it is critical that Congress takes its time to conduct a thoughtful process to ensure the seat is filled with someone who will faithfully represent our Central Texas values and protect and uphold our Constitution.”

Following is the text of a letter sent to House Members today from Rep. Carter.

Cosponsor H. Res. 621 to urge the Senate to Reject Liberal Supreme Court Nominations

From: The Honorable John R. Carter
Date: 2/29/2016

Dear Colleague:

Please join me in sponsoring H. Res. 621 urging the Senate to reject any liberal Supreme Court nominations to replace Justice Scalia this year.  The House needs to make its voice heard on this critical matter!

Our nation was shocked to learn of the passing of Justice Antonin Scalia, one of the longest-serving Supreme Court Justices and an unwavering defender of the U.S. Constitution.  Justice Scalia was a giant on the Court, well known for his wit and strict interpretation of the Constitution.  He leaves a void that will not easily be filled, and we especially cannot allow President Obama to fill that void with someone who shares his activist ideology.

The people have a chance to speak this November and -- like many of you -- I believe they will send a strong message of rejection to Barack Obama's liberal activism.  It would be wrong to cement that activism on the bench over their objections.
