Purpose: The Byrne JAG program funding for the Copperas Cove, Texas Police Department to create a crisis intervention team by hiring Mental Health Peace Officers. These officers will not only respond to calls for service where a person is in crisis but will provide follow-up for at-risk individuals. The intervention team will improve officer and citizen safety, increase availability of support, services, and treatment to people before a crisis, decrease the frequency of enforcement encounters with individuals with mental illness, and redirect enforcement resources to allow for additional crime detection, suppression, and community involvement. This request would be a wise use of federal funds as Byrne JAG funds may be used to support mental health and behavioral programs, to include crisis intervention teams.

Purpose: U.S. Department of Transportation Highway Infrastructure Program request for capacity improvements to IH-35 and IH-14. This is a high-priority project to expand Interstate 35/14 through Temple and add direct connections to the HK Dodgen Loop (State Loop 363) that will improve freight movement, military response, and resident travel. Interstate 35 is one of two north/south interstates in Texas, and is an international freight link, carrying 137 million tons of freight traffic valued at $307 billion. Interstate 14 is also proposed to run concurrently on this highway segment, which will support movement of personnel and equipment to and from Fort Hood.

The project will establish connectivity between residential, commercial, and public-school properties in west Salado, one of the fastest growing areas of the community.
